In this episode of the Global EdTech Leaders Series, I speak with Romeo Ramirez, Director of International Partnerships at ISTE+ASCD, about one of the biggest misconceptions in education technology: the belief that better tools alone lead to better outcomes. Drawing on his work with schools, ministries of education, UNESCO, and UNICEF, Romeo argues that technology succeeds only when schools create the conditions for it to succeed — through leadership, professional development, clear institutional vision, and implementation that extends beyond individual teachers.
We also discuss the ISTE Distinguished Schools program, first launched in Latin America in partnership with Santillana and now expanding globally. Rather than focusing on individual products, the program works with schools across policy, infrastructure, professional development, and classroom practice, recognising that sustainable innovation depends on the entire educational ecosystem rather than isolated classroom initiatives.
Finally, we explore what international EdTech companies often underestimate when entering the US market. Romeo explains why evidence, patience, and a deep understanding of local procurement processes matter far more than simply having a successful product elsewhere. Companies should arrive with a demonstrated impact already in place.
