Choosing the Right Measurement Tools for K-12 EdTech Impact
An impact evaluation study needs to be carefully designed to work
As demand for evidence-backed EdTech grows, rigorous impact evaluations are crucial to ensuring real learning improvements, guiding policy, and optimizing resource allocation. Outcomes-based projects align financial incentives with measurable impact, ensuring meaningful change in education. As more organizations share their expertise, standardized processes will drive greater impact, enabling comparative studies, richer data, and EdTech development focused on proven learning outcomes rather than just reach. Today we share a post about selecting measurement tools for impact evaluations.
Before conducting an impact evaluation, it's crucial to assess whether the EdTech tool is ready. Conducting an evaluation too early risks wasting resources that could better serve product development. Impact evaluations are most effective when the product has already been tested for feasibility, alignment with user needs, and implementation in real-world contexts.
Developing a Theory of Change is a key step in preparing for an impact evaluation. It explains how and why expected changes will occur, based on existing literature. The Theory of Change should clearly distinguish between short-term outputs (e.g., time spent using an app) and long-term outcomes (e.g., improved literacy or numeracy skills).
The Devil in the Design!
A well-designed evaluation is essential for valid results. It requires careful planning, including appropriate sample size, managing attrition rates and ensuring sufficient engagement with the EdTech tool. Identifying the right dosage of use is also critical.
Measurement tools should be either piloted and validated for the study or they can be established, standardized measures. The Education Outcomes Fund (EOF) has recently released a Technical Brief detailing key standardized measures for early childhood interventions, which can support such efforts. Read more about these tools and how they can support the evaluation of your solution.
